NATIONWIDE, MORE THAN 20,000 YOUNG PEOPLE AGE OUT OF FOSTER CARE EVERY YEAR. For most, the outcomes arent great. Theyre heading out into the world with next to nothing — no family, no money, no support. Aging out of foster care and into college is a difficult transition that few make successfully: Every 18- and 19-year-old thinks theyre ready, but youre not. Youre not ready for shutoff notices. Youre not ready for eviction notices. Youre not ready for car repossessions. In Ohio, we have a number of Older Youth Initiatives to ensure that young people involved in the foster care system get the tools they need to make the most of their lives, including formal collaborations between colleges and state foster care programs. Our Independent Living Services also offer opportunities to build daily living skills including additional education or training, housing assistance, counseling and other services. Looking for additional services for a young person aging out of foster care? Would you like to be a foster parent or youth mentor and make a REAL difference in a young persons life?
