NERD ALERT: The big referendum is here today. This has nothing do with the leadership of the labour party or the independence of a commonwealth nation. Today Australian and New Zealand Chartered Accountants are voting decide if they should merge their institutes (hence the alert). Given many of you fall into this category, can I firstly encourage you to vote before polls close on 25 October. Secondly, I’d like to encourage those voting to vote NO. For me the benefits don’t out way the risks and downside. My main issue is that Kiwis and Aussies more often than not have different have different priorities highlighted by our vastly different economies. I also don’t think merging will make our combined voice louder or carry more weight in the international community then two separate bodies. Finally, there will also be an increase in my membership fees. In summary, this merger is just an exercise in empire building that will dilute our voices. Vote NO.
