NEW CENTURY SOUL MANCHESTER ALLNIGHTER - MANCHESTER 29 Mar 2014 - Allnighter Brilliant venue, superb dance floors with two rooms, bar and speak easy and a covered frontage for the smokers, easy to find, ample parking and a DJ line up that is spot on yet the numbers were way down during this night for lord knows what reason as you could not find anything to criticise? The clocks did go forward so you lose an hour and it was Mothers-day on the Sunday, not too sure what the reason was but the numbers were thin to say the least. To be honest the Main Room looked empty but Room Two was absaloutley leaping with some serious music played by people who dont take them selves too seriously, Sammy Dee was spinning as I arrived, remember he won the world Northernsoul Dancing Competition a few years back and what he was serving up in Room Two was Modern Soulful Dance that was OVO and he set the tone for the evening to come, the usual suspects were in attendance eager to dance and lap up new sounds and we got what we wanted! Room Two of Radcliffe Civic Suite is a gem, it offers a vibrant slice of quality Soul that starts with Modern and hits you with all the things that make me go ooh and I know no other place that does this along the M62 Corridor and that is triumph for Radcliffe and a travesty for the Northernsoul community who seam destined to have Modern and Seventies written out of the history books! I flit from room to room but the Main Room is thinning out numbers wise yet the music and the DJs are top flight, Bob Hinsley plays a belter of a set and I never take for granted his box of tricks and the dedication and knowledge let alone money needed to fill such a play list that vibrates well into today’s Northernsoul Scene, Andy Dyson throws his thing down and you can taste the quality, Sean Haydon steps up to do his up-tempo funkiness with a few surprises and he is a constant pusher of boundaries and reminds me that I know nothing what so ever about soul music as he takes me to school every time! Back then into Room Two and the scene is quite different, it is hot steamy and rammed to the rafters with dancers as Pat Bleasdale and Mark Etheridge give yet another layer to this delicious trifle that really shouldnt work but does quite well thank you very much! Room Two ain’t for every one, if it was I wouldnt be in there, music wise it is a mixed fruit pudding and a complete joy, Matt Sneath raised his game this evening and got it completely right with his up tempo Devils Music which quite frankly should be illegal but what the hey I loved it! Andy Garside was left to place the cherry on top and that he did so very well pleasing the regulars and gaining some new converts to Room Two In summary, it was a game of two halves, the Main Room was poorly supported but Room Two was leaping. Radcliffe deserves to be supported, Modern and Up Tempo Dance is back, the staff and promoters are working hard to give the punter what they want without compromising the concept and this is still the top flight Allnighter on the M62 Corridor. I will be back.
