NEWS UPDATES AT 12 O’CLOCK WITH ORANGE. Civil society organizations fighting against corruption want government to enact stronger laws to punish those convicted of the vice. This as anti-corruption court sentenced former local government permanent secretary John Kashaka to 10years and 9days in prison over the botched deal of 70,000 bicycles that saw government lose over 4.6 billion shillings. The director anti-corruption Coalition Uganda Cissy Kagaba says 10 years imprisonment is not enough to curb the rising corruption tendencies. Makerere University lecturers under their umbrella body Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) have threatened to lay down tools if the university management does not effect their payments before the opening of the semester. MUASA chairman Muhammed Kigundu says they demand over 7billion shillings in May and June arrears which must be paid before the close of business, today. However, the Vice Chancellor Prof Ddumba Ssentamu says, the university is not in position to clear the financial crisis. Masaka Grade I magistrate Susan Awinyi has sent motor race champion Ponsiano Rwakataka to prison over the alleged involvement of the sportsman in illegal fishing in Kasese district. The dead include world-renowned Dutch Aids researcher Joep Lange who was among a number of passengers en route to an international Aids conference in Australia.
