NFL history for everybody but especially football fans Kenny - TopicsExpress

NFL history for everybody but especially football fans Kenny Giambattista, Steven Hirsh, Scott A. Margulis, Paige McD, Matthew Bowdle, Dave Phillips, and Rob Phillips. On this day in 1947 the Chicago Cardinals (now the Arizona Cardinals) won their only NFL title when they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 28-21 at old Comiskey Park. The Cardinals have not won a championship since then, making their drought the NFLs longest. Giving you an idea of how long ago this was, the game was not televised (the 1948 championship game, a rematch of the two teams played in Philadelphia that the Eagles won 7-0, was the first televised NFL championship game). Only 30,759 attended the game as the NFL was well behind major league baseball in popularity in those days, and the Cardinals moved to St. Louis in 1960 and then to Phoenix in 1988. Interestingly, the Cardinals are considered by NFL historians to be the oldest NFL team, their roots preceding even such grizzled old teams such as the Bears and Packers. They started play as the Racine Cardinals (named after an avenue on the South Side of Chicago) in 1913 and played at Normal Park Stadium (named after a park and street near Racine Avenue). Later on they moved to the old Comiskey Park on 35th Street. Their red team jerseys originally were faded secondhand acquisitions from the University of Chicagos Maroons; team owner Chris OBrien commented that the color looked more like Cardinal Red than maroon and the name stuck. youtube/watch?v=BibnZZEY6Ys
