NMA begins indefinite strike Their major demands: 1. Discontinuation of recognition of non-medical doctors as Directors and Consultant title to any other health worker other than medical doctors. 2. appointment of a Surgeon-General of the Federation, payment of clinical duty and hazard allowances and withdrawal of the Central Bank of Nigeria circular on medical laboratory equipment. Dr Kayode Obembe said “A consultant is the owner of the patient; many health workers now go about acquiring Ph.D so that they can be called Doctors. The title should be restricted to only a medical doctor.” Indeed our intellectual class have failed this nation. So from 1960 till date that our health care delivery system has been below good performance, its because we don’t have a surgeon general of the federation? I wish to ask, will it be an administrative post or he will be the one to assign surgery cases to surgeon in all tertiary hospitals?? I am forced to compare countries on this issue…Even in South Africa, a patient is entitled to see a pharmacist for consultation via Self Medication. In fact Self-medication is allowed I their health care system once it is administered by a certified pharmacist. I wish my Medical Doctor friends would contribute to this debate.
