NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione will welcome more than 160 new probationary constables to the Force today. The 161 students from “Class 319” of the Associate Degree in Policing Practice will attest at the NSW Police Academy at Goulburn today (Friday 23 August 2013). The recruits will be sworn into the NSW Police Force by Commissioner Scipione to start work at their new stations on Monday (26 August 2013). Commissioner Scipione said as the recruits take their oath of office, they make a promise to protect and serve the people of this State while exercising the highest level of integrity. “Policing can be a challenging career, but through dedicated and ethical service, the men and women of this attesting class can expect experiences that make it more than just a career,” Commissioner Scipione said. “And they can expect the camaraderie and guidance of their new policing family through each and every one of those experiences. “I extend my best wishes to all the new officers. I sincerely hope they find the experience of serving the people of NSW as satisfying as I do,” Commissioner Scipione said. The students will attest today with the rank of probationary constable. They will then complete 12 months on-the-job training and study by distance education with Charles Sturt University before they officially graduate with an Associate Degree in Policing Practice. The officers will then be confirmed to the rank of constable. Joining the recruits as they attest will be 11 new police dogs which have successfully completed training as either General Purpose or Detection Dogs. During the ceremony, Senior Constable Justin Knight will be conferred a Valour Award for conspicuous merit and exceptional bravery when an offender, armed with a sawn-off rifle, fired at him with intent to murder at Eveleigh Street, Redfern, on 20 January 2007. In addition, five retiring police officers with almost 200 years of combined loyal service will be honoured as they march off the parade ground to the salute of Commissioner Scipione. FACTS AND FIGURES ABOUT ‘CLASS 319’ • A total of 161 new recruits are being sworn in today. • The class comprises 111 policemen and 50 policewomen. • 73 probationary constables studied as undergraduate students, while 65 studied via distance education. • Three Probationary Constables studied through the Bachelor of Justice Studies (Policing) pathway and 15 others joined through joined through the University of Western Sydney pathway. • Five recruits joined through the Rail Corp transfer scheme. • Among the probationary constables attesting today, 137 were born in Australia and 24 were born overseas. Their countries of origin include the United Kingdom, Philippines, Iraq, South Korea, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, Thailand, Nepal, Russian Federation, Uruguay, England, Vietnam, India, Poland, Bermuda and Nigeria. • Languages other than English spoken by the students in Class 319 include Filipino, Hindi, Yoruba, Samoan, Assyrian, Greek, Spanish, Vietnamese, Arabic, Korean and Khmer. • 23 of the new probationary constables identify as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background. • The youngest recruit is aged 19 and the oldest is 47 years.
