#NUTSHELL – DECEMBER 29th — PASSIONATE ABOUT CHANGE? – Acts 21:26-32: Several years ago a 33 year-old man named Larry Walters decided he wanted to see his neighborhood from a new perspective. So he went down to the local army surplus store and bought forty-five used weather balloons. That afternoon he strapped himself into a lawn chair, filled the balloons with helium and took flight. Walters assumed the balloons would life him about 100 feet in the air, when unsuspectingly he soared more than 11,000 feet into the sky. Several hours later, local authorities helped him safely to ground. Later that day, police and reporters asked Mr. Walters, “Why did you do it?” “Because,” he said, “A man just can’t sit around…” The reality is, Larry Walters was right more than he knew. It is impossible to soar to new heights if we are just “sitting around.” William Jennings Bryan once wrote, “Destiny is no matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, but a thing to be achieved.” The Christ-follower is a passionate individual; he is one who possesses the conviction and drive to make things happen. In reality, most of us as Christians have great intentions, but unfortunately that is often as far as it goes. So what keeps us from acting in faith and obedience to make a difference for the Kingdom? It’s a matter of passion and faith…ultimately it is our love for God and others that compel us to act in His name and it is God Himself that empowers us to impact the world around us. If we only ask, God will give us a renewed passion to know Him better and an authentic love towards those around us. In doing so, we must keep our eyes open for opportunities to reach out with that love. Ministry begins with passion, then is fueled by faith and takes shape through action. “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul and all your mind….and, Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39).
