NZ post wins at YOG August 24, 2014 The New Zealand team continued to impress at the Nanjing Youth Olympic games with a 21-14 win over Basketball powerhouse Spain and a comfortable 19-15 win over Romania that sees them sitting near the top of their pool with just two losses so far and poised for the knockout rounds. The Kiwis won against Spain on the back of some brilliant long range shooting, with Coach Anthony Corban pleased with his charges. “As a team we were more locked in and focussed on our offensive execution than in previous games. We still had a few flat spots during the game—and these are the things we need to address—if we are to push on at this tournament. “Game by game, collectively as a group, the team is starting to understand the style of game New Zealand has to play to be competitive and win at international level. Izayah and Ray knocked down outside shots and the tournament saw the first glimpse of Sam Timmin’s outside shooting ability. “It was a tough game for Isaac—but he is a quality shooter and player—and his turn will come on other days. “Defensively at times we still had breakdowns, struggling to deal with dribble penetration, but Spain only hit 1 from 8 from the three point line, as we contested outside shots.” In further games overnight New Zealand then pushed tournament heavyweights Brazil in an intense defensive battle, losing 8-9 before going on to end the day on a high note with the win over Romania, leaving just the clash with Russia to decide final seedings heading into the sudden death round of 16.
