Nakorn is the public face of Bangkoks urban gardening movement known as the Veggie Prince. A group of GUI members also had the chance to meet him when our Kampung Chief brought the team over to Thailand exactly two years ago.. “At that time, there was this belief that if you wanted to live a life that deviated from the mainstream, you would need to go to a rural area to pursue your dream for an alternative way of life – to leave the city or retreat from society. I found this idea unrealistic.” Indeed, and that is why we speak of the 21st Century Kampung Culture. Is it just about only slowing down when we are in the Kampung Kampus? Or is it more about rethinking about how we live in our urban context, and how we can learn to have a different state of mind as we go about with our lives? From the Kranji Countryside Farmers Market last weekend, we realized that people are seeking alternative and more sustainable ways of consumption as well as better ways to take care of themselves - be it physically, mentally or emotionally.
