Negativity about politicians won’t change the situation for better About payment of salary& pension to the MP/MLAs even though I have explained the justification for that, still friends put the same questions. It is very disappointing since it projects deep rooted prejudice against them. Sri Shyamakanta Choudhury, Er.Subhrajit Mahapatra, Sri Siba Prasad Dash, Sri Prasanta Kumar Dash, Sri Prasanta Joshi & Sri Srideb Chandrabhaga have raised the following points. 1. MP/MLAs should not get salary because they are involved in so many scams. 2. Why should pensions be paid to ex MLA/MPs? They earn more than everything during their working period. 3. MPs don’t have responsibility. They are not accountable for their deeds. 4. MPs sign files only. Why should the files go to them? 5. If a JE is corrupt, there must be politician behind him. 6. MP/MLAs do ‘SEVA’, so why pay salary to them? In again answering to these points let me again tell you that may be, many MLA/MPs are corrupt. Practically for some MP/MLAs the salary is peanut. They do not depend upon that. Even if the salary is raised still they will resort to corrupt practice. But this must be understood that, there are some honest MLA/MPs also. If they are not paid salaries, how will they monitor the progress of their MLA LADS/MP LADS works? How will they manage an office in their constituencies? How will they retain staff at their constituencies at Bhubaneswar or Delhi? And from where would they pay thousands of rupees demanded by the people for medical expenses, for study of their children, for meeting flood, cyclone like disaster expenses etc. etc.? If you do not pay adequate salary, honest MLA/MPs will be compelled to resort to corruption. Yes, becoming an MLA/MP is a ‘SEVA’. But can you render any ‘SEVA’ without government fund? Now, almost everybody is getting pension for doing nothing. People get old age pension, widow pension, handicapped pension, artist pension, etc. etc. Then why accuse MLA/MPs for getting pensions? May be many MLA/MPs are not responsible. But to say that they are not accountable is not true. It is a travesty of fact. They face the people every 5 years or less. That is accountability. For not being accountable they also get defeated. Many officials are also found irresponsible. Do you stop their salary for that? And please don’t be malicious. Don’t say that, why should files go to them. Please remember that no file goes to the MLA/MPs. You are very seriously mistaken. And don’t say that behind every JE’s (meaning if govt. servant) corruption there is a politician. This type of allegation devotes stretching your imagination and malice too far. That truth is, behind the corruption of every politician there is a government official. See, how Siddhartha Behuria, the then telecom Secretary was kept in jail for more time than A.Raja, the Telecom Minister.
