Never forget. September 16-18, 1982: Sabra and Shatila massacre “They would pick on the men at random and make them crawl on the floor. If they thought they crawled well, they assumed it was due to some sort of military training, so they took them behind a sand bank and killed them.” — Siham Balqis, a survivor of the massacre in Shatila refugee camp The Sabra and Shatila massacre, which occurred between September 16-18, 1982, saw the slaughter of nearly 3,500 civilians, mostly Palestinians and Lebanese Shiites. Hundreds of members of the Phalange party — a Lebanese fascist militia — in collaboration with the Israeli army, slaughtered Palestinians, mostly women, children, and the elderly, in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camp located in Beirut. The massacre took place under the command of Israeli Gen. Ariel Sharon with active collaboration from the U.S. This massacre led Sharon to being dubbed “the butcher of Beirut.” He remained in a permanent vegetative state for 8 years before he died on January 11, 2014.
