Never read this book as its omnipresence in school reading lists - TopicsExpress

Never read this book as its omnipresence in school reading lists occurred long after I was gone; Im sure the books fans probably hate the adaptation as they almost always do (just as Im equally sure that the black and white alienated its own contingent of viewers). But on its own terms this is a good, effective film, well composed and managed. Its pretty simple stuff, though it does have some appreciated ironies and implied complexities along the way, and its therefore smart of Noyce to keep it tight and concise. Its a fable, even a parable, and one that does offer up some suggestive and lingering thoughts about its scenario even if it does emotionally overplay its hand at the end. Brenton Thwaites continues to impress in this, doing very different work here than in The Signal and displaying a broad range of capability. Here he has to evidence a naive innocence and a convincingly fragile sincerity. His presence is not as arresting as it was in The Signal but nor is it meant to be; its properly sublimated to the text.
