New Delhi: Residents of Delhi want to know what will happen if a 7.7 magnitude earthquake hits the city after a trembler rocked Pakistan on Tuesday and killed over 350 people. According to experts Delhi lies in an zone where a major earthquake may occur any time. Delhi lies in very sensitive Seismic Zone 4 where major earthquakes do take place. A major quake in Delhi can cause massive damage to both life and property. Delhi is situated on the top of three active seismic fault lines. These fault lines are: Sohna fault line, Mathura fault line, Delhi-Moradabad fault line. After several years research Indian Institute of Science scientists have that almost the entire Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Uttarakhand face the threat of a devastating earthquake. Dr CP Rajendran of Centre for Earth Sciences says that a major earthquake is due in Central Himalayas as no big trembler has shaken the region for the last several years. If such an earthquake takes places, then it has the potential to flatten major cities like Delhi, Kanpur and Lucknow. The friction between the Indian plate and Eurasian plate under the ground leads to major quakes. In the last few years, earthquakes have hit Pakistan, Iran, China, India and Afghanistan. Though scientists says is not easy to predict the exact time of an earthquake, but such a natural calamity can hit Delhi.
