New Mexico, 1995. The Department of Energy is desperately groping - TopicsExpress

New Mexico, 1995. The Department of Energy is desperately groping for wasteland, before the DOE acquired Carlsbad for nuclear disposal. The dispute over accepting the wastes divided descendants of two of the tribes most honored leaders, Geronimo and Cochise. Silas Cochise, the great-grandson of the chief of the Chiricahua group of Apache, was the manager of the waste project; Joseph Geronimo, a leader of the opposition, is a grandson of the legendary Apache warrior. More persuasive to the Mescaleros themselves were the arguments of tribal members like Rufina Laws. Ms. Laws spoke of a dream of iridescent water running down the mountain and poisoning the people. Champion for the people! In radio commercials broadcast before the referendum, Mr. Geronimo was particularly effective. Speaking in Apache, he said that like his grandfather, who fought the United States Army off and on from 1876 to 1886 with a few determined followers, he would do anything to protect his tribe. Unfortunately, the DOE persuaded another section of New Mexico for radioactive trash. Since the nuclear accident of a few weeks ago, the DOE says the continuous radiation leak is only minutely remnant. What does that mean?
