New Mexico Shooting: Teacher Described as Hero Calls Incident Harrowing CNN (01/15/14) Karimi, Faith John Masterson, a social studies teacher at Berrendo Middle School in Roswell, N.M., has been called a hero for his actions following a shooting at the school on Jan. 14. A 12-year-old suspect walked into the gym with a shotgun and opened fire on students waiting to begin the school day, critically injuring two. Officials do not know what the shooters motive may have been. According to Gov. Susana Martinez, Masterson stood in front of the armed shooter and talked him into dropping the weapon. Authorities say the shooting could have been much worse had it not been for Mastersons actions. Mastersons was not injured in the incident, though another school staff member did suffer very minor injuries. Mastersons was asked by police not to discuss details of the shooting, saying only that the incident was a harrowing experience.
