New governor: TMC refuses to comment Kolkata, 14 July: The ruling Trinamul Congress today declined to comment on the appointment of former UP Assembly Speaker K N Tripathy as West Bengal gover nor, while the Opposition hoped the new Governor would maintain a ‘neutral stand’. Last week the state Asse mbly adopted a unanimous motion urging the Centre to consult chief minister before appointing new governor. Mr Shyamal Chakr abor ty, senior CPI-M leader said during the day, “We have always opposed making a political leader the governor of any state, but both the Congress and the BJP are continuing with the practice. Mr Tripathys app ointment is one more proof, since he belongs to the BJP. PCC chief Adhir Chowdhury said, “Whoever is the governor of the state should listen to all.” The party which is running the government at the Centre has appointed a person to the governors post who shares its political ideology, senior RSP leader Kshiti Goswami said. It is fine if the governor functions in an unbiased manner, he said. Mr Tripathy, a five-time MLA from UP, is a lawyer. sns
