News; Members of Parliament on the Committee of State and Statutory Enterprises- COSASE have tasked officials from National Drug Authority—NDA to explain why the authority doesn’t have a substantive board. The board was apparently dissolved in July last year by former health minister Christine Ondoa citing fraudulent acts and mismanagement. According to NDA executive secretary Gordon Sematiko Katende, the chairman of the former board Frank Mwesigye took the matter to court which ruled that the interim board be declared null and void and that the old board be reinstated. Katende also told the committee that the current minister Ruhakana Rugunda has taken the matter before cabinet, and that the process to appoint a new board is ongoing despite the court ruling which has prompted Mwesigye to take the minister to court for contempt of court But the committee’s lead counsel Crispus Ayena asked NDA officials how another board can be appointed when there is a court order directing the reinstatement of the old board. He says he has received reports of 40 banana plantations destroyed by hailstorms and heavy winds. Maize, Beans, Peas, Sweet Potato, Cassava, and Banana plantations about to be harvested were lost to the rains. Muwonge has asked area Woman Member of Parliament Hanifah Kawooya and the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness to come to people’s rescue. He says the best aid they could receive would be seeds to plant before the rain season ends. This is the second time heavy rains batter Ssembabule in under a month. The first rains at the beginning of the month affected five Lugusulu villages: Nakasenyi, Nabinoga, Bwogero and Kyetume. Ssembabule district often suffers from heavy rains in the southern region.
