Newsletter Week of Oct 17 This Issue: TEMPORARY IS FOREVER -- Administration today granted another extension of Temporary Protected Status to illegal aliens first given temporary residence in 1999 & 2001 It was so predictable that it is impossible to be shocked. The Obama Administration today continued the tradition of the Bush and Clinton Administrations of pretending that temporary means permanent and that giving work permits to foreign citizens has no effect on working-age Americans. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for eligible nationals of Honduras and Nicaragua for an additional 18 months. The affected illegal aliens have been in this country since the beginning of this century. Although Congress never granted them amnesty, they are still here because Pres. George W. Bush and then Pres. Barack Obama have issued one extension after another to people first given temporary amnesty from deportation in 1999 (Hondurans) and 2001 (Nicaraguans). The fact that they are still here to benefit from this latest extension is proof of the corruption of the TPS tool that makes a mockery of a well-intended humanitarian program. TPS was created as an emergency policy to allow the Executive Branch to temporarily spare illegal aliens deportation when extraordinary and t emporary conditions such as environmental disasters or wars in their home country temporarily make repatriation exceptionally difficult. Needless to say the temporary contemporary emergency conditions of 1999 and 2001 are long since past. But as we at NumbersUSA and many of our allies have often said, In matters of immigration, nothing is quite so permanent as temporary status. Other long-time illegal aliens who currently benefit from the TPS designation are those from El Salvador, Haiti, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan and Syria. TPS YET ANOTHER REASON AMERICANS DONT BENEFIT FROM U.S. JOB GROWTH One form of Executive amnesty and enforcement-law nullification after another has added to the labor surpluses that bedevil the incomes of American wage-earners and their families. But the greatest contributor to the labor surpluses is Congress through its insistence on adding about one million new legal immigrants a year to compete for U.S. jobs. Thats why NumbersUSA is running this ad in most of the states with the hottest Senate races: hub.numbersusa/route/9/5441a0c674e18a11912c4f93/2490188/9 (Click to watch the TV ad.) These are states where candidates are having to pay attention to what voters really care about. Our intent is to apply as much pressure as possible on all the Senate candidates to shape their immigration positions on the basis of what is best for Americans and legal immigrants already here. We hope you are participating in the many ways that our NumbersUSA staff is providing for you to raise this simple question in immigration policy: WHO SHOULD GET THE NEXT JOBS? As the ad notes, nearly all job growth since 2000 has gone to new immigrants. Th e legal immigrants who took the jobs did nothing wrong. They merely used an opening offered by Congress. But why should Congress continue to do this? Thanks for all that you have done and please stay as active as possible in these final two weeks of the Senate campaigns. Language Matters WHEN THEY SAY: immigration reform WHAT THEY WANT: uncontrolled immigration Sadly, the term reform is used almost universally in the media and by politicians to include work permits and legal status for illegal aliens, and increasing legal immigration from the current million or more a year. Instead of CONTROLLED IMMIGRATION which we favor, they want very high numbers of foreign workers and their families that are not tied to the real needs of the American people. While it is possible that a person favoring controlled immigration might use the term, be wary of anybody advocating for immigration reform. Visit our Language Matters page. CIS: Overall Immigration Enforcement Down in 2014, Impacting Job Prospects for Unemployed Americans and Wages for American Workers The Center for Immigration Studies has issued a new report based on a recent DHS document that shows a decline in interior immigration enforcement in 2014 and, more disturbingly, that 167,000 convicted criminal aliens whose deportations have been ordered are still at-large in the U.S. The report by the Centers director of policy studies, Jessica Vaughan, found that deportations from the interior of the country are down 34% from 2013 and 58% from 2009. hub.numbersusa/route/20/5441a0c674e18a11912c4f93/2490188/9 thu, Oct 16th Study: Almost All Deported Illegal Aliens Were Criminals The Migration Policy Institute (MPI) issued a report saying 95 percent of the illegal aliens deported between 2009 and 2013 were criminal and repeat immigration offenders. Illegal-alien advocates have made news decrying the Obama Administrations deportation of non-criminals, but the MPI report confirms DHS followed internal policies that prioritize deportations based on criminal records and ignore the illegal presence of other foreign nationals. hub.numbersusa/route/21/5441a0c674e18a11912c4f93/2490188/9 Fri, Oct 17th Fri, Oct 17th hub.numbersusa/route/22/5441a0c674e18a11912c4f93/2490188/9 E-Verify Receives High Scores on 2013 User Survey A survey conducted in 2013 of E-Verify has found that an overwhelming number of users had a positive experience when using the system. This ad is part of a national campaign informing Americans that nearly all U.S. job growth since the year 2000 has gone to new immigrants while the number of Americans working has fallen. The ad questions whether Congress should continue to add 1 million more immigrants every year to compete for jobs or if the priority should be for the jobs to go to the Americans and legal immigrants already here who are still looking for work.
