#NileBasin THE NILE BASIN HYDROLOGY. The Nile Basin Initiative Secretariat (NILE-SEC), as part of its basin monitoring activities produces operational Actual Evapo-transpiration (AET) estimates over the Nile Basin Countries. AET is estimated using Remote Sensing based on an improved algorithm from the global MOD16ET algorithm. ET values are estimated with a grid-cell size of 1 km and temporal resolution of 8 days for the period January 2000 – 2014. Evapo-transpiration (ET) is one of the major components of the water balance over the Nile Basin and its sub-basins. It accounts for about 87% of the basin’s rainfall but this value varies from a sub-basin to another Based on land use/cover and prevailing climatic conditions. It is difficult to measure evapo-transpiration but recent advances in satellite observations have enabled its estimation over large areas such as the Nile basin. The Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) has utilized such advances and generated a dataset of ET estimates over the Nile Basin spanning the period 2000 to date. nilebasin.org/index.php/media-center/publications/doc_download/71-technical-bulletin-understanding-nile-basin-hydrology
