No COLA from WA Legislators in SIX years? As educators, we know professional compensation is necessary so we can recruit and retain the qualified, caring teachers and support professionals our kids need. That means competitive pay, good health benefits and a secure retirement. Yet educators across the state -- including Western Washington -- have gone six years without a state-funded cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). And since 2010, the state has not increased state funding for educators health insurance. Costs have risen, but our compensation hasnt kept up. Thats wrong. We deserve better. If you agree, then email Gov. Inslee and your legislators and tell them its time to invest in the professional compensation we deserve. Gov. Inslees budget plan falls far short on school funding in general, and compensation specifically. Yet the economy is improving, and the Supreme Court has ordered the state to increase K-12 school funding. The court even said, nothing is more basic than adequate compensation. This is the best opportunity weve had in a generation to make major gains in school funding and educator compensation -- but, as the governors budget shows, its not a done deal. We need to get involved, and we need to make our voices heard. Email Olympia and tell them to fully fund our public schools and to fund professional pay and benefits for the people who work in them.
