North Florida Land Trust – Strategic Conservation Mapping Full case study Since 1999, the North Florida Land Trust has protected more than 3,500 acres of beautiful, productive, and environmentally significant land in and around Northeast Florida. Florida is home to a wide array of highly productive habitats and species, including more than 1,000 marine and 200 freshwater fish species, and over 700 terrestrial animals. From rolling sandhills to coastal beaches, Florida is teaming with ecological beauty. Value of the land and habitat Northeast Florida, locally known as the “First Coast,” is a place with a wide and diverse set of natural and cultural resources. Within the bounds of Northeast Florida there is the oldest city in America in St. Augustine, The most productive agricultural soils in Florida, the largest city by area in the United States in Jacksonville, three expansive tidal estuary ecosystems, and the largest river system in Florida. There is a national estuarine research reserve, a national estuarine ecological historic preserve, and five state aquatic preserves, as well as dozens of state park, state and national forests, and county preservation and .As the sole land trust operating in this service area, North Florida Land Trust is an urban, suburban and rural land trust, while seeking to preserve natural, working and historic resources. North Florida Land Trust seeks to preserve those natural and cultural features of the highest significance for the benefit of future generations.
