Not many people know this and not many of the queens speak about this but here goes. Many times, when a young woman decides to participate in the Miss Dominica pageant, the most she has is the hope and confidence that she can actually become Miss Dominica (Thats awesome right?). However, you cant buy a thing with hope and confidence...not weave, not make up and definitely not the fancy queen outfits lol. We dont understand that at the beginning of the pageant, before the girls are sponsored they have to make do with what they have.... Or in other words...beg or borrow! If we say you know you dont have so why did you sign up? then let me put it this way. You know you have no money so why dream big? Why strive towards owning a business? You know there are no jobs so why go to university? In other words, never take that first step (ouch!). When I decided to participate someone said to a friend she doesnt have a job and shes going up for queen? Had I listened then what would I have missed out on? A scholarship and the perfect opportunity to represent my community. Im saying all this to say that we need to be more supportive of our girls. At the end of the pageant Dominican girls are more polished than alot of the other islands (I kid you not). So why do we feel the need to bring them down? Theyre amazing.
