Nov9/14- We’ve had many friends who lived in China. The overwhelming common thread we’ve heard is the excessively poor air quality, especially in the cities. When we arrived in Shanghai we didn’t notice it that much and people would say that the breeze from the water helps keep Shanghai’s air refreshed more that Beijing. While in Beijing we experienced even cleaner air. We were really lucky, with the APAC event the government shut down all industry in the prevailing wind, shut down 50% of traffic and gave most government workers a week off. The sky was actually blue and people in Beijing called it APAC blue. Today we left Beijing for Xian, a 1500 km journey mostly westward....and we experience the air quality that the APAC brush could not reach and what everyone was talking to us about before....as you can see from the pictures the smog is so thick you think it’s an overcast day....today was sunny, no clouds, but air pollution at over 500 ppm (APAC blue was below 60 ppm). This dense smog was not just limited to cities but the countryside as well...for 1500 km we experienced the worst quality air of any country we visited.
