Now that I am taking another guitar class, I decided I too could write a country song. So far, it is really simple--simple-minded and predictable maybe, whereas, as a poet, I want to do all the things that make a poem good but not so complex that it doesnt work as a song. Besides that, I have to stick to three basic chords because they are all I can manage right now. Iris Dement or Greg Brown or Paul Simon or Willie Nelson or John Prine, come on down and help me. Dont even ask what its about. Its whiny and self-pitying with a rough narrative. Just this: theres a reason I write free-verse poetry. English is a rhyme-poor language. And metrics? Well, lets just say Im throwing in a little yodeling just to pep things up.
