Now that I’m towards my mid-20s I think about what’s ahead and the concept of marriage does come to mind. A poem, inspired by one that I came across in Malay, was written to encapsulate my thoughts on this matter. This poem doesn’t do justice to the beauty of the literary language that was written in Malay, and I don’t recall having a name or an official author to the poem, but I do hope the same message gets across to my sisters and brothers in faith who are reading this :) Please tell him, Tell him, there is a message for him. Tell him, the greatest love is divine love. Tell him, human love may potentially make him forget. Please advise him, don’t love me more than he would to his Lord. Advise him, don’t remember me more than he does the Almighty. Advise him, don’t pray for me more than he does for his parents. Please inform him, Allah comes first for that leads to Paradise. Inform him, his parents should be ahead for him for beneath their feet is where Paradise lies. Please remind him, I am attracted to him more for his faith than his looks. Remind him, I love his taqwa more than his wealth. Remind him, I adore his pudicity and mannerisms. Please watch out for him, when he places human love on a higher pedestal. Watch out for him, when he falls into his own fantasies. Watch out for him, lest his desires get the better of his mind. Please make him realise, I belong to the Lord. Make him realise, I belong to my family. Make him realise, his responsibilities are still to his family. Please make him patient. Forget about sweet words amidst dreams that have not been materialized. Make him patient. Should I decline to get closer, to keep within boundaries. Make him patient. Should distance makes the heart grow fonder. Please inform him. I don’t wish to be his greatest struggle. Inform him. I don’t wish to be the cause of his failure. Inform him. I am letting the Lord care for him. Please bring this message to him. I don’t wish to make him forget. Bring this message to him. I wish for him to achieve his dreams and ambitions. Bring this message to him: “Be a supporter of my successes”. Please tell him. I plead for pure untainted love. Tell him. Love for the sake of the Lord is invaluable. Tell him. Our relationship is sacred as long as we keep it the same with our Lord. Only you know who he is, dear Lord. Hopefully my message gets across to him even though I do not know who or where he is. May the single bee which is always in the remembrance of Allah, enters the forbidden garden with the highest of character to meet the thorny rose that has been well kept by its owner. And for all the reminders I have been telling to give him, may these in turn be reminders to myself too.
