Nutria, Myocastor coypus Nutria a semi-aquatic rodent that looks kind of like a cross between a beaver, a capybara, and a guinea pig, with the tail of a rat. They are actually pretty cute, in my opinion. Nutria are native to South America, but were introduced to North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia as an alternative to mink. The big problem with Nutria, aside from, they just don’t belong here, is that in high densities they are able to convert marshland into open water, thereby threatening rare marshland species of bird, fish, invertebrates and plants. They have caused the decline of the whiskered tern, Chlidonias hybridia, in Italy by destroying the cover of water-lilies, Nymphaea sp. In Japan they are also are threatening the persistence of the critically endangered dragonfly Libellula Angelina and the vuInerable Acheilognathus longipinnis, the Deep-Bodied Bitterling. Back to that whole fur thing…some people liken them to big rats, so I’m not sure about wearing a Nutria skin coat, even if I didn’t agree with PETA on the issue of fur, despite their invasive status. However, here is a website that is promoting the wearing of Nutria fur to save the wetlands. I’ll let you decide if it’s a fashion revolution or not.
