OAKLAND, CA - Stanley Roberts KRON 4 recently did a piece with CHP Oakland about truck restrictions on Interstate 580, for his #PeopleBehavingBadly segment on KRON 4 News. See the segment here: youtu.be/w7_f90T-bkk A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE TRUCK BAN: The truck ban on I-580 within Oakland predates the construction of the freeway itself! Prior to the freeways construction, MacArthur Boulevard ran along what is now I-580. In 1951, the residents of Oakland elected to ban truck traffic along this corridor. This was codified into city ordinance in 1963. In 1965, Caltrans HQ completed construction of Interstate 580 along the MacArthur corridor, and called it the MacArthur Freeway. The cities of Oakland, Piedmont, and San Leandro, and Alameda County petitioned then-Governor Reagan to continue the truck ban that had been in place for over 15 years. This was approved, and the truck ban remained in place on the freeway. In 1999, the California Trucking Association requested the ban be reviewed and removed. The City of Oakland reaffirmed its wish for the ban to remain in place, and on February 18, 1999, the California Legislature introduced Assembly Bill 500 into law, codifying the truck ban into the California Vehicle Code. California Vehicle Code Section 35655.5 states that no trucks with a gross weight of 9,000 pounds or more shall be operated on I-580 between Grand Avenue in Oakland and the city limits of the City of San Leandro. The CHP reminds drivers that I-580 in this location is off-limits to all trucks weighing 4.5 tons or more, and that violating this law is considered a moving violation and carries the value of a point on the drivers record! The complete history of the truck ban can be found on the Caltrans District 4 website: dot.ca.gov/hq/traffops/engineering/trucks/routes/restrict-hist-580.htm
