OK I cannot resist ... I have been having a long, intense, and enjoyable conversation with a colleague of mine on the topic freedom of speech ... should it really be unlimited ? Then I read following article in my New York Times on the way home in the tram tonight ... _____________________________________________________________ FROM NEW YORK TIMES ( LINK FOLLOWS ) A French comedian, Dieudonné M’bala M’bala, was detained early Wednesday over comments suggesting he sympathized with Amedy Coulibaly, the gunman accused of killing four hostages at the kosher supermarket on Friday and of fatally shooting a police officer the day before. Mr. M’bala M’bala’s lawyer, David de Stefano, called the comedian’s detention “shocking.” “We are in the land of freedom of expression?” he asked sardonically. nytimes/2015/01/15/world/europe/charlie-hebdo-prophet-muhammad.html?smid=nytcore-ipad-share&smprod=nytcore-ipad _____________________________________________________________ My naive take on this ? Unfortunately, instead of exercising his freedom of speech ; i think the man inadvertently implicated himself as an accomplice ( or at least a sympathiser that could possibly take up the flag or at least support future attacks ) in an ongoing crime investigation ... Am I splitting hairs ? Maybe. I am unbiased ? Probably not. Or have I completely misread the situation and the ramifications of it ? Could be. But it was particularly interesting to me given the conversations I have been having, and am curious what the response will be. At the moment I am still in a muddle about everything - but I hope that ultimately after reading your responses I will have the answers necessary to forge peace between all religions, nations, and peoples for the ages ... But I am going to bed now so dont expect a quick reply ...
