OK Weather Watchers lets dig in - if you want a quick forecast- look at the bottom of this post. Lets take a look at our first 3 images - Observation Map and a couple Current conditions. The actual storm or area of Low Pressure is still several hundred miles away in Western New Mexico. If you look at the radar image you see we have moisture in the form of showers headed NNE out of Oklahoma ahead of the main storm. This moisture is what will be causing our freezing drizzle and freezing rain overnight. To pin down where this is most likely going to happen we look at the Observation Map and Current conditions. Take a look at the Observation map - you can see in Western sections of the State it is Cold enough for Snow or Freezing rain - However the moisture isnt there and it wont be for several hours. Look at the Great Bend Current Condition-it is 27 degrees which is plenty cold - the issue that the moisture isnt there- the dewpoint is 18 making the Relative Humidity 69%. Look at Hutchinsons Currents- 32 degrees with a 28 dewpoint giving us a 85% Relative humidity. Its is moistening up and will likely see freezing drizzle beginning in the next couple of hours. I circled the area on the Observation Map that will likely see Freezing Drizzle or Freezing Rain occurring in the next few hours based on the temperatures and dewpoints. Temperatures will be fairly steady maybe dropping a couple degrees allowing for the area of freezing precip to increase throughout the overnight. As you can see- in some locations that is all it will take to be at 32 or lower. As the Upper low gets closer, that is when the Snow begins in Western sections of Kansas spreading ENE throughout the day/evening Saturday. 2-4 inches looks like the highest amounts now with 1-2 inches being the amounts outside of main stormtrack. OVERVIEW: Freezing drizzle/rain beginning in South Central through East Central areas in the next hour or two. As temps cool to below freezing and moisture continues to increase watch out for Hazardous Driving. Sat AM Snow begins in SW Kansas spreading into Central and SC KS around the lunch hour. Questions- please ask AND PLEASE...HELP US SHARE YOUR WEATHER We really need to know what you are experiencing and your temps.... Thanks - hope this helps you understand this storm a little better..
