OK, its time for my travel reflections...the ones that arent fit for print anyway. 1.) Florida doesnt suck unless it does. Tourist places aside, it seems that if you live here you have a choice of absolute perfection or absolute poverty. Theres not a lot of in between. I think thats true of a lot of tourist-driven places but here its the difference between a stunningly beautiful neighborhood or a house on blocks with a tin roof, rusted. 2.) Do not be surprised if youre gone for a week and your teenaged sons dont notice. Apparently thats normal. 3.) If youre in Orlando and you can get a room with free breakfast for $77 at the Fairfield Inn Marriot or a room without breakfast for $87 at the Courtyard Marriot, pick the Courtyard and go to Dunkin Donuts for breakfast. The Fairfield looks like something from National Lampoon movie. The Courtyard has a waterfall and a Starbucks. Need I say more? 4.) To make up for spending an extra few bucks to not stay in hell, I opted to rent a car at an off-airport location from a car company Id never heard of. Saved me $200. Had to wipe the mysterious fluid off the seat, but the shuttle bus gave me a nice tour of Places You Never Want To See On Vacation. And it saved me $200. 5.) The souvenirs people really love to get arent sold at gift shops. Theyre the exotic foods sold at seedy little country stores with bars on the window. These kinds of souvenirs are especially effective for punishing your teenage children who have apparently forgotten that they have a mother!!!! 6.) Boiled peanuts may sound romantic and southern, but theyre really just mushy and gross. And also, if you find a penny in your cup of boiled peanuts that you bought from a couple on the back of a trailer on an unnamed country road, its not lucky. It just means that you cut into the profit margin of a couple who will likely net -$14.57 for the day and you need to take some antibiotics immediately. 7.) Go to the places nobody else goes to. I promise you youll learn something new. 8.) If youre homesick, chances are you have a home. Thats a pretty nice thing.
