OK, so several people have asked me during the past couple of years if Lindy Hop was an influence on the Spanish/Latin Hustle. Let me answer that question once and for all and according to my experiences from the true origins of the Spanish/Latin Hustle. The original Hustle was not influenced by the Lindy Hop, and there is a big enough difference between Original Hustle and the Lindy Hop that should make it obvious! The original Hustle was an elegant and stylish partners dance where the Lindy Hop was a lot more energetic and rambunctious, but it was not classy at all!!! During the early days of the Hustle it contained moves more reminiscent of Salsa and Mambo than the Lindy Hop or any other dance for that matter. During the later 70s however, and I would say from 1976 to 79, moves from other dances were incorporated into the Hustle, and yes even moves from the Lindy Hop, Swing and a host of other dances. That depended on the individual team incorporating those types of moves into the Hustle for competition purposes! Be that as it may, the original Hustle was not influenced by the Lindy Hop or the West Coast Swing in no way shape or form! I will let you guys decide for yourselves with two videos, one of the Latin Hustle being done by a member of the Latin Symbolics, Hector Berrios and the other I will place in a comment below this one, of the Lindy Hop from the 1930s. Please keep in mind that during late 1974 and into 1975 some of us did incorporate moves we would pick up from watching the old black and white movies from the 30s, however, it wasnt Linday Hop, it was more like the elegant swing style of Fred Astaire that influenced our style more than any other dance! I am sure great Hustle dancers such as Floyd Chisolm and Nelly Cotto our official King and Queen of the Hustle can add more to what I said!
