ON JONATHANS VISIT TO BORNO During his third media chat in 2013, President Jonathan said he has not visited Borno state, the center of Boko Haram attacks, because the airport there was not functional at the time he planned to visit. “And we did not want to land somewhere and fly in to Maiduguri with a helicopter for obvious reasons.” This same airport till end of last year was said to be have been shut down. The only person that was permitted to use the airport at will seems the alleged Boko Haram sponsor, Ali Modu Sheriff. My question is: is the airport now functional? What has actually changed, because as far as I could recall there was not any pronouncement by either the state or the federal government yo the effect that something was being done to bring the Airport to an even keel. May be I am not sufficiently up to date, may be, is the word. Or is Jonathan simply playing politics with a surprise visit to an already distressed state whose 13 local governments are still under the brutal jackboot of the insurgents? And he has nothing concrete to tell the world If it is not politics, is it the voice of the young South African parliamentarian who chided him about the insensitivity and irresponsibility over the Baga massacre of reportedly 2000 people, that has triggered this unannounced visit just like the way the voice of much younger, Nobel Laureate Malala forced him to acknowledge that some 200+ young girls who are Nigerians citizens from Chibok in Borno state were in captivity in the hands of Boko Haram and something urgent need to be done to rescue them. I am still wondering what did this visit to Borno State serve, what value did it add? Can Jonathan work on the streets of Maiduguri like the way APC Governors fix some time ago at the height of the insurgency to demonstrate leadership and real emphathy with the displaced victims?
