ONE BODY, ONE SPIRIT DAILY BREAD FOR SATURDAY, MAY 10, 2014, 3RD WEEK OF EASTER Acts 9:31-42; Ps. 116; Jn. 6:60-69 “The Church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace. She was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord, and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit she grew in numbers” (First Reading) The unity of the Body of Christ, the Church, is built from the Holy Eucharist. Ironically, the disunity of believers somehow also hinges on disbelief in the Eucharist. But one remarkable thing about the Church is that she does not modify the Truth for the sake of numbers. When the rest of the disciples left Jesus because of his teaching on the Eucharist, he did not go after them, trying to explain. Surprisingly, he turned to the Twelve and asked, ‘Do you also want to leave?’ The Church is unbending on the truths of faith because they are not mere moral teachings, they are Life. More so with the Eucharist, it is the Life of the Church. The Eucharist is the flow of the Spirit from the Sanctuary into the lives of the members of Christ to build up the Body of Christ into one mature person (Eph. 4:11-13). It is through the Eucharist that the Church can truly and fully become one Body, One Spirit in Christ. The First Reading says: “The Church throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria was at peace. She was being built up and walked in the fear of the Lord, and with the consolation of the Holy Spirit she grew in numbers” Even the verse of the departure narrative is remarkable Jn. 6:66 (666). Lord, fill me with love for you in the Most Holy Eucharist, so that by reverently feeding on you, I can grow in your love for all.
