ONE of the best establishments in Ukee......wahoo........ Mark Penney Gallery opened in 2007, inspired by a long history of capable artists quietly working in the area. I was encouraged by architect Wayne Wenstob whos vision was to elevate Ucluelet by building Whiskey Landing. We look for talented artists who I feel are making a significant or meaningful contribution to Canadian Art, or to the Community. Many of our artists are known for their community involvement, environmental stewardship, or arts advocacy - myself included. I tend to prefer artists who document their experience rather than assert an artist statement, or a specific dialogue. Our market ranges from casual art observers to savvy collectors on holiday - they tend to gravitate toward themes of the island lifestyle, and the natural environment but a mix of modern and abstract pieces compliment the more conservative works. We frequently attract first time art buyers because of a relaxed approach to collectable art and an attractive list price. Visitors have sometimes spent a great deal of effort to travel to the west coast of Vancouver Island, they respond to passionate depictions of our area, our way of life and want to take home that feeling captured and reflected in the art. I take pleasure in exceeding peoples expectations of local art in Ucluelet, but the truth is that this area has a fairly cosmopolitan arts scene. There are a number of exciting arts based festivals, events and showings throughout the year, often showing a surprising level of sophistication and depth of talent. .
