OSCE SECRETARY GENERAL, LAMBERTO ZANNIER, ADDRESSES MGIMO Lamberto Zannier, the Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), provided a lecture for, and answered questions from, MGIMO students on November 8. Mr Zannier, a former Italian career diplomat who became head of the OSCE in 2011, was welcomed to MGIMO by vice rector for international cooperation and public relations, Andrei Silantiev, who spoke about the activities of the OSCE under Zannier’s leadership, and noted it was his second visit to MGIMO, following a previous visit and lecture during 2012. Lamberto Zannier, in reply, emphasized that he was particularly happy to again have the opportunity to address students, as he considered it vital to involve the younger generation in security issues and awareness of them. He spoke about the role of the OSCE, highlighting that in addition to its military role, it also addressed ecological, economic, and energy security, and particularly noting that creating new bases for cooperation between states and peoples, was essential for underpinning lasting peace. After his lecture, Lamberto Zannier answered numerous questions from students. Mr Zannier’s visit to Russia was part of a working visit in conjunction with ongoing discussions between OSCE members, and has included discussions on counteracting cross-border threats, the fight against terrorism and extremism, and ensuring stability and safety Eurasia.
