OSOGBO-The people of Ile-Ife, in Osun State have faulted the proposal for creation of additional Local Government Areas by Governor Rauf Aregbesola now before the state House of Assembly, saying that the approach adopted by the government lacked international application. Briefing newsmen in Ile-Ife yesterday, the President of Ife Action Council, a socio-cultural organisation, Mr. Lawrence Awowoyin noted that the rationale for creating Local Government Councils was purely for development. He maintained that the people of Ife have been badly treated in the proposed Executive bill. The Governor had last December sent a proposal for the creation of additional 27 Council Areas from the existing 30 Local Government Areas and Ife East Area Office, Modakeke-Ife to the state House of Assembly for approval. In the proposal only three additional Council Areas are proposed from the existing four Local Government Areas that make up Ifeland. For instance, Ife East, Ife Central and Ife South have one additional Council Area each, while none was given to Ife North. But, the people of Ile-Ife stated that detail analysis of the demographic statistics of some Local Government Councils in Osun State has thrown up questions that needed urgent answers. Specifically, the group asked for additional eight Council Areas with the three already proposed. The group queried why some Local Governments with less population than Ife Central and Ife East Local Government Areas respectively have two additional council areas proposed for them, while Ife Central and Ife East Local Government Areas attracted one each in the proposal. It also asked why Ijesha land with a population of 621,909 got additional six Council Areas, while Ifeland with a total population of 643,582 got only two. “Modakeke-Ife was created years back, all that was done in the proposal was to change the name from Area Office to Local Council Development Area, LCDA,” the group said. The group had in a letter dated January 2nd, 2004 addressed to Governor Aregbesola titled Appeal for more Local Council Development Areas in Ife land appealed to the governor for favourable reconsideration of the proposal before final approval to demonstrate equity, fairness and comradeship in the distribution of infrastructure, participatory governance and dividends of democracy.
