OYO GUBER 2015: Between Zonning And Popularity The alliance of the 7 PDP gubernatorial aspirants of Ibadan extraction has generated a lot of controversies.The remaininig 4 geo-political zones in Oyo state have not only reacted negatively on this,they also see this as an attempt to cause disaffection amongst various party members. Recently,a chieftain of the party and Osi Olubadan of Ibadan land,High Chief (Sen)Lekan Balogun cautioned the guber aspirants of Ibadan extraction not to jeopardise the fortunes of the party with their declaration in the next general elections. In the history of PDP in Oyo state,all the 5 geo-political zones have played key roles in the survival of the party.In 2003 gubernatorial election,PDP recorded low votes in Ibadan land,the leaders of the party needed to wait for the outcome of the election results from Ogbomosho,Oke-Ogun,Ibarapa and Oyo zones which eventually gave victory to the party.Also,in the 2007 governorship election,the election results from Ogbomosho and other zones did the magic for PDP because of the poor results recorded in Ibadan.PDP eventually won despite the low votes recorded in Ibadan zone. As fate would have it,PDP lost the 2011 general election for the first time since 2003 because there were poor performances from Ogbomosho and other zones.The party recorded an impressive performance in Ibadan land but poor outing in other geo-political zones.The significant roles played by other geo-political zones in the state can not be over emphasized hence the need to avoid any act capable of fanning embers of discord is imperative.Ibadan is the largest zone in the state but,there was never a time a particular political party secured bloc votes in this geo-political zone.The inputs from other zones determine who gets what.Any attempt to rubbish them will spell doom for the party. The Candidates Otunba Alao-Akala(Ogbomosho land),Engr. Seyi Makinde(Ibadan North East),Sen. Tesleem Folarin(Ona-Ara),Alhaji Azeem Gbolarumi (Ibadan North),Elder Wole Oyelese (Egbeda),Prof.Taoheed Adedoja(Ibadan South West),Prof. Soji Adejumo(Ibadan North West) and Dr. Azeez Adeduntan(Ibadan South West). The recently concluded gubernatorial election in Ekiti State has shown clearly that a popular candidate enhances the chances of the party at the polls.There were 14 governorship aspirants in PDP,13 of them supported consensus/zonning arrangement,only Fayose clamoured for party primaries.The party leadership organized a free and fair contest which eventually produced the most popular candidate that in turn won the governorship election for the party. Although,one may not compare Oyo state with Ekiti in so many ways,but,the fundamental issue is,fielding a popular candidate as the partys flagbearer is key to winning election.Its very important to state here emphatically that none of the PDP governorship aspirants of Ibadan extraction can match the political clout of Sen. Rasheed Ladoja of Accord Party,AP and Ishaq Ajimobi of All Progressives Congress,APC.Infact,any attempt by the leadership of the party to impose any of the candidates on us will not only spell doom for the party,the chances of winning in the 2015 general election is NEXT TO ZERO.
