Obama-Modi meeting. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has done well - TopicsExpress

Obama-Modi meeting. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has done well for India and has scored big for himself. He has got the long stalled Indian bid to generate 10-15% of its power requirements from nuclear energy back on rails. He has managed to create a climate favorable for FDI (which usually includes as much at 60-70% Indian money held overseas) to create a bigger manufacturing base, and also to make possible more exports of value added goods, rather than be mainly an exporter of primary goods. Today is a time to render unto Caesar what is due to Caesar. We need to keep focussed on the economic aspects of this relationship, rather than be constantly seeking baubles the professional diplomats keep hankering for. What will being member of the Nuclear Suppliers Group do for job creation in India? And some of the toys that the Military keeps hankering for are also quite irrelevant to our real needs. What will India do with drones such as the Globalhawk or Predator. Do they think that Pakistan will allow us to use the Predator on their terrorist hideouts like they do US drones? Or do you think China will take kindly to India flying the Globalhawk over its territory? I think they should be realistic in our expectations. The US does not have the kind of money India needs to build its infrastructure like High Speed Railways or Expressways. For this we need long term funds - 30-40 year spans. That only countries with huge Sovereign funds, like China and Japan, can invest in long term projects such as these. The US can be a provider of private capital for relatively short term investment in manufacturing, and most important of all - markets for our goods. Thus, all the three major global players, USA, China and Japan, are important to India. Modi is playing this diplomatic game adroitly and is creating strong bilateral relations with all three. Just as the US cannot sacrifice its interests in Pakistan because India would like that , India too cannot sacrifice its interests just to placate any of its big three partners. So far so good!
