Occasionally, someone will ask, Why did you delete my comment? The answer: Who did you bash? Why was it important for you to bash them? Why should I care? If you denigrate one of my colleagues, Ill delete the msg immediately, lest they see it and think I agree with the thought. If you denigrate a professional without being a comparable professional, then youre just expressing an uninformed opinion. Im not interested in that either. As always, if you have something insightful and substantial to add to a thread, Im all ears -- I know it looks funny, but its efficient. Okay, yes -- whats going on here is a finely tuned sense of communication forensics. Im not just looking at the words, Im looking at the subtext -- where are you coming from? If the subtext is contribution, Im good with it -- even disagreement can be a contribution. But if the subtext is just to vent and spread a little bitterness, thats not a contribution, thats a perpetration. Yes, theres wiggle room, but if I get a visceral reaction -- that wrinkling of the nose that comes when I smell a turd -- it gets flushed. A few years ago, in another venue, I tried to share this -- and I was accused of coaching. My response to that particular screechweasel was, No, Im not coaching you. Youre uncoachable. (I speak as one who has been paid to coach, I dont do it for free.) What Im doing here is self-teaching myself by noticing, analyzing, and sharing what Im discovering. That you arent interested, that you take it personally, reveals more about your own intellectual bankruptcy and your commitment to haranguing than it says anything about me. Now begone before someone drops a house on you too. Okay, I exaggerate, but the harantugan packed up her cauldron and her enablers and departed for their own private cesspool, a place I exited as soon as I realized they wanted to make me the guest of honor at an internet pile-on. If all you want from the internet is a place to dump on others, youre a bully. I have no time for bullies -- although they do sometimes make great chew toys. /rantoff
