October 15, 2014 Devotion: WHAT DOES COMMITMENT MEAN TO YOU? Does the mere sound of the word make you cringe? Fear seems to creep up on many when this word is suggested. If you allow God into the equation, your fears will no longer be an issue. Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines the word commitment as “a promise to be loyal to someone or something, a promise to do or give something”. When terms like “promise”, “loyal”, and “commitment” are brought to my attention, I think of Jesus Christ. I think of everything he was and is and always will be. He was sent down from Heaven to live a human life, to show us that he feels emotions as we do. He was able to experience physical pain. He went through trials and tribulations as we do. He was made fun of, betrayed, and ultimately tortured to death. He kept his commitment to his Father and sacrificed himself for us and our sinful ways. Yet we have the nerve to fear commitment? We will never face what he faced. Why are people afraid? Why is it so hard to say I do or I will? When playing a game of poker, you can decide to put everything you have into a particular hand, either because you know that you have the best hand, or because you are bluffing and taking a chance. Either way, you are making a commitment to bet all of your money whether you win or lose. This is called “all in”. Same goes for life commitments. No matter if you win or lose, you should be all in. When we put our whole selves in a situation, we are showing dedication, motivation, and respect. Ultimately, we are giving God honor and praise by being committed and keeping our promises. He owed us nothing, yet gave us His Son. We owe Him our lives, but He only wants our hearts. That’s not too much to ask for. In life, we should be “all in” with everything we do. There should be no fear of committing. Staying uncommitted just means that you are choosing not to be held accountable for your actions. In the bible, first and foremost, we are asked to be committed to God. Matthew 22:37-38 says, “And He said to him, “You should love The Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the great and first commandment. Simply put, if you are loving God “all in”, you are happy to keep His commandments. If you are keeping His commandments, then you are dedicated and committed to every aspect of your life, loving with your whole heart, being loyal, keeping your promises, and giving your undivided attention to the important things like your church, your family, your job, and your finances. Commitment doesnt have to be a negative thought. It can be a very positive and uplifting experience that leads to a fulfilling life for you and the people you come in contact with. Give God the glory today and break the chains of fear by making and keeping your commitments!
