October 2013 - Safety at Work campaign......Short Facts # 1 • Each day around 360 workers are injured seriously enough to need a week off work. • Each year 13 employees out of every 1000 will put in a workers’ compensation claim for a serious injury.Per hour worked, male employees experienced a rate of serious injury or disease one third higher than female employees. • A typical workers’ compensation claim results in four weeks of absence from work. • One in four serious claims require 12 or more weeks off work. • The industries with the highest rates of injury are: Agriculture, forestry and fishing; Transport and storage; and Manufacturing. • The occupations with the highest rates of injury are: Labourers and related workers; and Intermediate production and transport workers. • The total economic cost of work-related injuries and illnesses to the Australian economy for the 2008–09 financial year is estimated at $60.6 billion, representing 4.8 percent of GDP. • One in five serious claims involves an injury to the back. • The likelihood of making a workers’ compensation claim increases with age. • Musculoskeletal conditions account for 56 percent of all serious claims.
