Odd memories. In 1999, the choir at my then church, First United Methodist Church, got an opportunity to sing in Vienna, Austria at the beginning of Advent. My mom and I went. Kristen was 18, and in her first semester at college and busy exerting some independence, so she stayed home. It was the first time I was leaving her alone, but I trusted her. Lots of great neighbors and friends, and she had a good and responsible head on her shoulders, I would try to call each day, and we were only going for a few days, Wednesday (or Thursday. ??) to Tuesday. Plus, her dad would call her every day as well. So. Mom and I went, enjoyed our whirlwind trip, I managed to check in with Kristen every day, did not hear of any emergencies from the watchers, and got ready to come home. We got up very early on Tuesday for the return flight, probably 3:00 as we had to leave for the airport by five. Mom and I are stumbling around, getting dressed and doing last minute packing, when the phone rang for the first time since we had been there. It was Brad, Kristens dad, absolutely frantic because, as he said, Ive lost the kid! Apparently he had been trying to call her every day, she had not called him, and he was making this call right before I came home to tell me she was lost. Well, I laughed, reassured him she was fine, and pondered on the mysteries of men who dont want to admit emergencies, and women who create them before they happen.
