Official elated by government’s help TACLOBAN City Vice Mayor Jerry Yaokasin said he is pleased with the National Government’s help for their city despite the recent squabble between Mayor Alfred Romualdez and Office of the Presidential Assistant for Rehabilitation and Recovery (OPARR) Panfilo Lacson. “I am happy that we got the assurance that the National Government will never leave us and Secretary Lacson even instructed implementing agencies to fast-track the rehabilitation works in the city,” Yaokasin said. Storm ‘stole’ P2.8B In return, Yaokasin stressed the need to be transparent with spending of funds provided to the City Government for the repair of local government structures destroyed by Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan). In his visit to Tacloban City this week, Lacson announced the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has downloaded some P8.09 billion fund to national government agencies and local government units for the implementation of various projects within Tacloban. Of the more than P8 billion downloaded fund, P3 billion was for infrastructure, P367.44 million for social services, P4 billion for resettlement, and P714 million for livelihood. “These facts will not agitate people in thinking that the national government is not helping the city due to politics,” said Yaokasin. “With this list, this is a good development for our city that in spite of what is happening right now, assistance from the national government continues,” he added. Yaokasin also revealed that OPARR already approved the City Council resolution requesting assistance for the city street light projects to be implemented by the Department of Energy, Leyte II Electric Cooperative, One Meralco, and Energy Development Corporation. “This program is now ready to go, we are just waiting for the approval from the city mayor,” said Yaokasin.
