Often called the Queen of cultures pearls, South Sea Pearls are regarded as some of the most rare and precious pearls. This is in part due to the species of oyster used. This wild oyster is far larger than the ones used for Japanese pearls, averaging up to a foot in diameter. The Pinctada Maxima oyster is a wild oyster resulting in an uncertain supply for cultivation. Sources claim most South Sea cultured pearls are not subjected to enhancements. The rarest and most expensive is the warm pinkish-white. Silver-white is in the highest demand and now bright gold tones (not to be confused with yellow-white) are becoming very popular.
