Ok, I finished walking my first precinct this past weekend. It was a large one. At least my feet are telling me that! I will walk my neighborhood precinct tomorrow because its a small one and Cari Swan talked me into walking some more this weekend. I really dont want to but I also want to know that I did all I could do, win or lose, come Nov 5. I am walking in support of four solid, intelligent, accessible, lovely candidates. I know it is a long shot to think that all four will gain a seat but, I think these four would interact amazingly well and actually enhance one anothers abilities as they work together to shape our great city. So tonight I am walking our citys newest, most well-informed and greatest precinct, the HBCF, seeking support for the four candidates I support for the City Council as well as for City Attorney. I like Erik Peterson, Lyn Semeta, Hector Hek Valdez and Alex Polsky. These four will bring unique strengths to our city and to one other as they serve together. Erik Peterson has a resume to be proud of. A US Marine Corps Vet, an Eagle Scout & Scoutmaster, an electrical contractor and, most important, a surfer! Hes a family man with two sons at Marina HS. He loves the city as do all of us. He got involved because he became concerned about the citys finances, served on the Finance Board and now wants to help lead this city. Looking forward to Erik bringing his financial knowledge and common sense to our citys Council. Good luck, Erik! Lyn Semeta is an attorney which, in years past, was an automatic no vote for me. She tells a story, however, that illustrates a positive use of her skill set. My sense is that she has the ability to think and reason before acting. I think she will have a calming effect on the Council with an ability to form consensus and bring people together. I became interested in her candidacy when I learned that Dave Sullivan was promoting her. There is no doubt that Dave has been the lone voice for fiscal sanity in HB for the past 15 or so years. Looking forward to Lyn bringing her intellect and countenance to our citys Council. Good luck, Lyn! Hector Valdez brings a genuine willingness to do what is best for our city. His candidacy has been nothing but refreshing, energizing a host of residents who, til now, have been content to sit on the sidelines. He makes me think of when our country was formed and the patriots would leave their job to serve a stint in the newly-formed government and, when term was over, return to their livelihood. Beholden to no party, endorsed by none yet endorsed by us all, Hector Valdez will be a joy to watch as he joins with others to lead this city. Good luck, HEK! Our city needs you. Alex Polsky has impressed me every time Ive seen him speak. I attended my first candidate forum at Old World. I knew none of the candidates at that time and, for me, Alex was much the best at that forum. He made one statement that I couldnt get past however and it took me three more candidate forums before I decided he deserved my fourth vote. His credentials are exemplary as well. Hes a husband and father, a Federal Court Settlement Officer, a law professor at USC (which, btw, used to be an automatic no vote as well!) and practices as a professional mediator. He holds the highest independent ratings for professionalism and ethics available to attorneys. He has served as an OC Deputy District Atty and is a Professional Reserve Officer for the OC Sheriff. Alexs skill at balancing conflicting interests will serve our citys Council well. Good luck, Alex! I support Michael Gates for city attorney. He just seems to be the best of the two candidates. His record speaks for itself and his vision of how to lead the citys legal department makes sense. Looking forward to Michael bringing his leadership skills to our citys Attorneys office. Good luck, Michael! My choices were made as a result of attending four candidate forums, two candidate bonfires and several meet and greets. Good luck, everyone! Would appreciate your support of these five but whatever you do, do it with passion and have fun!
