Ok. I saw the video....and I respect what he says even though he will be overwhelming criticized by many, but I guess what makes Derek Jeter special is that despite those facts, he still considered among the greatest of all time. There are so many details that cannot be measured mathematically that made Jeter so valuable. his presence, instinct, heroic moment, calm, integrity, the way he handled the media, how he handle the pressure in the team of most pressure without mentioning that he has been the captain of it, etc. To say that he is the number one Yankee? Umm... well, if the game of baseball was a game that a man alone could make the final difference, then I would come up with a number one, but even Babe Ruth needed a good team (Lou Gehrig) around him. Babe Ruth started to play with the Yankees in 1920, but did not win a World series until 1923 (Lou Gehrig was a rookie and did not play in the post-season) was a , then 1927, 1928, 1932 (all with Lou Gehrig being Lou Gehrig). With that said, numbers makes great players, and numbers plus wins makes legends. Lets look into another sport Football (soccer). It is not the same a Messi without a World Cup than a Messi with a World Cup. However, still in sports such as Basket Ball, Football (Soccer), US Football, Tennis, Gulf, Chess, and Boxing [by the way individual player sports is obvious and easier to define the best one], you can define who was the best by the numbers because a player could make the final difference. In baseball, a low-budget team with non-starts could stunt anyone and win a championship (ex. Marlins 1997 & 2003); in other sports, no quite. Additionally, I have not mention the fact that some sports have defensive stats and offensive stats, and in some situations like baseball or US Football, you cannot lead both. Of course, you usually will pick the best offensive player in order to determine the best. What I am trying to say is that in baseball, it is just plain difficult and impossible to pick a number one of all time. We could maybe pick the best one by position or by stat or impact, but again, we are tented to go further and take one person into a divine-like level just because we get bias (yes, it is true. I am almost sure than our grandparents have a different opinion of Jeter than us by his status among the top players). I do not even know which public figure besides Posada (of course, it is number one for him) explicitly made the statement of Jeter being the number one Yankee: among the greatest, yes (top-15, top-10, and even top-5 if you wish). Now, He definitely deserves more credit than Mr. Olbermann sort wanted to take away by showing the bad side of the picture (for example, the categories where Jeter is standing alone among the Yankees such as more hits of all time, most-games started, etc.) Even other players (Schilling, Trout, Harper, etc.), other sportsmen (Jordan), and other people has a great opinion about him. Yes, we could say that in the era of technology, marketing, publicity, and even politica correctness, plus the Yankees influence in the game, sports, and other areas could influence in the popularity and high esteem that people (even rivals, Yankees haters or unrelated with the game) have about Jeter, but I again I think that Jeter deserves more than what Mr. Olbermann want to imply. Yes, I agree with him. Jeter is not the greatest player of all time as long as we establish the criteria for greatest. Again, we might have to accept the fact none can be the greatest of all time because that will mean pretty much lead in all categories (be perfect?) Or we could consider facts outside the physical skills that reflect greatness which I think Jeter was better at handling in over-all. Here are: -The numbers (even with the bad ones it puts him in great place). -Winner-Championships (no need to explained) -Accolades (so many) -The pressure he had to handle in a place of pressure (everybody knows what is to play for the Yankees) -Respect and presence -Instincts (look all the kinds of plays he has been part of) -Consistency (remember -beside 2010, Jeter numbers has been down only this year and the last one very likely because of the injure he is coming from late 2012 -good time retire). -Controversy-free almost. If we compare it with the greatest, we could conclude that he has been a guy to brought little if not any to the Yankees and the when it comes to distraction at least, the ones that he could control (people will always have critics not matter what). No all Yankees legends were that successful and at the same time so controversy-free. I could add a lot of more stuff, but with all that said, I think this should put Jeter in the category that where he is being considered right now. The Greatest? Ummm...depends what we mean by that, but again, who really is it?
