Okay it looks like the birds are ready for processing. We processed a few birds this past Saturday to check yields, and of course flavor, tenderness and juiciness, and boy are they GOOD! I am very happy with this flock, all the hard work of pampering to maintain low stress seems to have really paid off. From the regular fluffing of the bedding to maintain a clean dry place to sleep to the many buckets of grain carried to the outside range feeders. These birds have free choice fresh WHOLE GRAIN daily, not the cheapest feed supplements and fillers. We selectively bought our grain, not just taking the word of the sales rep. We really held their feet to the fire, as we would hear that deep breath as they started to take our weekly grain order. Our flocks over all health was outstanding, as we had minimal loss (less than 2%) this year. The birds were allowed to go outside sooner to the free range feeders and sun themselves and enjoy the fresh air then return to the coolness, security and comfort of the barn at will. I am especially proud of the efforts of the kids as they really stepped up with new found interest of our family farm. Im sure the promises of making some money helped influence their efforts. I couldnt be prouder of Emily, Ben and Adam and yes even nephew Danny who really worked very hard ,daily through the summer into fall feeding, watering and checking on the birds. As we have gotten closer to processing time I can see the changes in their expressions from frustration, irritability and disbelieve to proud, happiness and knowing what hard work is. I couldnt be more proud of all them .....Job well done! We will be starting to process our flock this coming Friday 11/22/13. ALL of our Thanksgiving Turkeys are sold fresh NEVER frozen! The USDA does allow turkey to be frozen for a period of time then thawed and still be called fresh, not us fresh means fresh! No play on words or government definitions, fresh means just you think it does, period! Our birds are processed a few days away from Thanksgiving and packed in ice. We will be delivering our fresh turkeys to select stores on Saturday 11/23/13, YES less than 24 hrs of processing, FRESH! You can order one of our FRESH TURKEYS at Bow Street MarketFreeport, Maine by calling (207) 865-6631 or in the Augusta, Newport & Monmouth Maine area Emerys Meat Markets (207) 621-6328. You can also order one of our FRESH turkeys at Raising Tide Health Food in Damariscotta by calling (207)563-5556. Thank you for supporting local agriculture & our family farm.
