On January 30th, we had some heavy snow in the morning that really got going between the time my newspaper is usually delivered and when I left my apartment. When I didnt see the paper, I figured it was snow-delayed, but it was not there on my return. I did consider that the paper might have gotten buried by the snow, to the side of the walkway, but I couldnt find it and thought -- not particularly seriously -- that perhaps Id see it when the snow melted. The snow mounds on the side of the walkway grew higher and higher all February long, though, with each new shoveling out. Weve now been having a bit of a melt, particularly yesterday. This morning, of a sudden like a crocus blossom, there was the paper on top of the diminished snow bank, all tightly wrapped in blue plastic. I can now read all about the icy traffic nightmare in Atlanta on January 29th, and the prediction for 2-5 inches of morning snow in the Twin Cities. I wonder if, as spring arrives and the snow mound continues to melt, it will reveal the long-missing February 1927 issue of the Saturday Evening Post. And then, ultimately, a woolly mammoth.
