On July 26, 2014, scientists with NASAs SABOR experiment off the U.S. Atlantic coast were making routine underwater measurements when a pod of dolphins glided by in the distance. The instrument, operated by scientists from City College of New York, measures the polarization state of light and is not directly related to the study of ocean mammals, but the visit was a welcome surprise for scientists now two weeks into the three-week voyage. Images were taken with a GoPro camera in time-lapse mode at a rate of one frame per second. NASAs Ship-Aircraft Bio-Optical Research (SABOR) experiment is a coordinated ship and aircraft observation campaign off the Atlantic coast of the United States, an effort to advance space-based capabilities for monitoring microscopic plants that form the base of the marine food chain. Researchers from NASA Langley are conducting the airborne portion of the campaign.
